Mat 5:48 “Therefore, be perfect, as your Father in the heavens is perfect.
Jesus commanded us to be perfect, if it is a command that means it is mandatory, if it is mandatory then that means it is possible. People get intimidated when they hear “perfect”, they do not believe it’s possible to be perfect as Jesus commanded us. If it is possible then that means there must be some testimony of others who have been perfect in God’s sight at some point. Thanks be to God that the Bible has many:
Gen 6:9 This is the genealogy of Noaḥ. Noaḥ was a righteous man, perfect in his generations. Noaḥ walked with Elohim.
Gen 17:1 And it came to be when Aḇram was ninety-nine years old, that יהוה appeared to Aḇram and said to him, “I am Ěl Shaddai – walk before Me and be perfect.
Gen 17:2 “And I give My covenant between Me and you, and shall greatly increase you.”
Job 1:8 And יהוה said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Iyoḇ, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and straight man, one who fears Elohim and turns aside from evil?”
ZECHIRAH AND ELIZEBETH (Parents of John the Baptist)
Luk 1:5 There was in the days of Herodes, the sovereign of Yehuḏah, a certain priest named Zeḵaryah, of the division of Aḇiyah. And his wife was of the daughters of Aharon, and her name was Elisheḇa.
Luk 1:6 And they were both righteous before Elohim, blamelessly walking in all the commands and righteousnesses of יהוה.
All these people were perfect because at some point in their lives they learned to blamelessly walking in all the commandments God had given them, and be consistent in them. This is what it means to be perfect, simply to do what God has taught you, obey His instructions. To say we cannot be perfect is to say we are to stupid to follow instructions OR to say God was cruel to make us unable to do what He has commanded. If God made us stupid or made us unable to do what He says then it’s His fault, attributing our falling short to God, not taking account of ourselves… This is what people are saying when they say no one can be perfect, that only Jesus is perfect. Yet we are commanded to be just like Him. Paul understood this:
1Co 2:6 Yet we speak wisdom among those who are perfect, and not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age that are being brought to naught.
This handful completely shoots down the argument that no one can be perfect. So the question is what does it mean to be perfect? Well, some say being perfect means you have never sinned ever in your life, yes this is a type of perfection and Jesus definitely has this, but this is not what is expected of us obviously, since all have sinned and fallen short and anyone who says they have not sinned (PAST TENSE) is a liar. Also when we are baptized, all our past sins are washed away. Then there is the perfection as in glorification, but only Jesus so far as we know has received this, so this can’t be the perfection listed by all the witnesses quoted from the Bible. The perfection being stressed here that is salvation impacting, is simply: that perfection is doing as you are taught by God, obeying His Word, following His ways.
David understood this:
Psa 119:1 Blessed are the perfect in the way, Who walk in the Torah of יהוה!
Psa 119:2 Blessed are those who observe His witnesses, Who seek Him with all the heart!
Psa 119:3 Yea, they shall do no unrighteousness; They shall walk in His ways.
How do we do this? It’s through the Grace of God:
1Pe 5:10 And the Elohim of all Grace who called you to His everlasting esteem by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, Himself perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
Tit 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
Tit 2:12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age
Luk 6:40 “A taught one is not above his teacher, but everyone perfected shall be like his teacher.
Jesus teaches us and we are expected to follow and obey Him. You are perfect if you are doing what you have been taught. Jesus may only teach you 2 things, if you do those 2 things then you are perfect, He may teach you 2 more things, if you are doing 2/4 of those things you are taught you are not perfect, if you press learn and walk in all 4 then you are perfect. We do not expect a 5 year old to operate as an 18 year old, likewise in the spirit. Babes in Christ are perfect if they do what is expected at their level, those who are more mature who know more, who know better they are perfect if they walk in what they have been taught.
Many do not believe we can be perfect, yet say nothing is impossible with God for the same reasons why they do not believe we can stop sinning:
